The New Arsenal is one of the oldest buildings of the Vilnius castles’ ensemble. According to the archeological researches a gothic brick building stood here in the 16th century. At the same time this building was a defensive wall of the castle. Vilnius’s voivode Mykolas Kazimieras Oginskis built a current palace in the place of the previous buildings. Architect Martynas Knakfusas formed the building following the principles of the Classicism. In the 19th century the New Arsenal belonged to the army and the barracks were moved into the building. The building was renovated and adopted to the needs of the museum in the middle of the 20th century.

Currently the National Lithuanian Museum resides in the New Arsenal. Exhibitions are dedicated to the Museum of Vilnius Antiquities, represent changeable moments in the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (from the times when the state was formed in the 13th century, till it’s fall in 1795), the culture of the Lithuanian peasants, and the art of cross making.

The Museum organizes educational, thematic excursions and lessons. The whole educational program “Pazinimas” is created for the students of the high schools. A civil-national project “Lithuanian National Museum for the Society in Learning” is being implemented since 2011. The aim of the project is to educate cultured, inspired, and creative personality, who perceives the origins of the national culture history and its originality, and is able to identify, estimate, and cherish the true values.
