The Eastern block of the castle’s arsenal, also called the Old Arsenal, stands in the territory of the Lower Castle, at the foot of the hill of the Higher Castle, next to the junction of the rivers Neris and Vilnia. The remains of the New Stone Age settlement were found here. The later findings are mainly the remnants of the wooden buildings from the 16th century. According to the archeologists the artisans used to live here, and this was the cradle of the city culture. The Old Arsenal is being mentioned in the written sources since the middle of the 16th century. The building was used to store armor, produced by the armor mills established in the area of the current Tilto Street. The building was damaged in the 17th century during the inner wars and the war with Moscow. It was rebuilt, but was burnt at the end of the World War II. The Old Arsenal was once again rebuilt in 1986 following the project prepared by the architect Edvaldas Purlys, and in 1987 the Museum of the Applied Arts was opened here.

The exposition of the Lithuanian pre-history consists of the archeological findings from the 11 thousand years BC until the 13th century, that is, from the first human appearance in the Lithuanian territory until the state was formed. The items of the ethnical history of the nation, everyday life, and the development of the way of life are exhibited here. The Museum also organizes concerts together with Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, cultural events, excursions, and other activities to introduce the world of art to the society.
