About Vilnius

Home > Learn
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. This town is known as the largest and the finest town in the country. In 1323 Vilnius was mentioned in written sources for the first time as Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas had invited European handicraftsmen and traders to settle here. This day Vilnius is a modern European city where up to 560 000 people live. Vilnius is known as a multicultural city over time: Lithuanians, the Poles, Russians, Jewry, Belorussians and other nations live friendly among each other. Vilnius also is cultural and political centre of Lithuania because all institutions of national goverment are set up: Presidential Palace, Parlament House (known as Seimas) and goverment, ministries, the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court, embassies of foreign countries and missions, missions of international organisations.

Narrow streets, yards, cosy cafes, bars, galleries and small shops are a real heaven for turists that are looking for serenity, romance and suprises. Vilnius is full of spectacular architectural chef-d'oeuvres that remained from the Middle Ages. Oldtown is a heart of Vilnius, which is the largest urban ensemble (more than 360 ha) in Eastern Europe and also is in the list of UNESCO heritage.
