Vilnius is really important historical, cultural and academic hub of Eastern Europe. European cultural traditions can be met here. Growing Vilnius was always well known as open town for newcomers from other countries. Vilnius was a hometown for Polish, Jewish, Russian, German and Karaites communities. For those reasons Vilnius is named as a cultural centre of Eastern and Central Europe. This town was a free crossroad for great cultural streams from Western and Eastern Europe.

Lots of cultural players from Italy, Poland, Germany, Hungary and other countries were living in Vilnius. Could be mentioned such as:

  • Laurynas Stuoka Gucevičius (1753-1798), architect;
  • Pranciškus Smuglevičius (1745-1807), artist;
  • Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911), composer and artist;
  • Adomas Mickevičius (1798-1855), poet;
  • Antanas Vivulskis (1877–1919), architect and sculptor.

Most of the artists were living and working in Vilnius and as a result most of the cultural agencies are located in the capital. Every tourist can go to the theatres, museums to see traditional works of art, listen for music.

was established in 1987. This building also is a part of reconstructed medieval castle. This building is a place where you can see Lithuanian and foreign art. Art expositions are constantly renewed.

is a place where everyone can discover the historical heritage of Lithuania. This museum was established in the ex-palace of medieval castle. So this building also included to the list of the cultural heritage.

Up to 250 thousand visitors come to this museum every year. Museum also invites intellectuals to come on Thursday evenings that are dedicated to the history of culture.

is another stop for tourists that are interested in arts. Lots of famous local and worldwide theatre stars are in the repertoire list of this theatre.

is known as a place where is tremendous acoustics. Here classics could be heard classics, famous national in international performers. Lithuanian national symphonic orchestra is well known around the world.

Vilnius theatre is the most surprising, energetic and breathe taking; where everyone will be able to choose their favorite. Most of them are located in the centre of Vilnius.

Eimuntas Nekrošius and Oskaras Koršunovas are artistic directors of Lithuanian theatre; they are famous worldwide and are invited to the most famous stages of the world. World press says that you should visit performances of Eimuntas Nekrošius, otherwise you will not be able to find common talk in high society parties. Performances of Oskaras Koršunovas can be seen in OKT theatre, performances of Eimuntas Nekrošius can be seen in the National drama theatre.

Those who are interested in modern art can visit more than 20 galleries that mostly located in old town. There is a huge range of exhibitions such as traditional and bellwether painting, sculpture is available in the galleries.

Vilnius also has more than 65 churches and they are visited by tourists, few of them are well known as places for chamber music performances.

Everyone who wants to feel horrifying Soviet ghost of the XX century, when you should visit KGB museum: insulator can be found in the basement, where thousands of Lithuanians were catechized and tortured before murder or exile to Siberia.

Vilnius has unique old town which is included to the world‘s heritage list of UNESCO. Old town has lots of authentic XIV-XIX c. buildings.

Lithuanian traditional national songs and dances are a unique part of Lithuanian culture. People of every ethnographic region have their traditional clothes, sing their songs and dance their own dances. This can be seen every four years in Vilnius.

As it was mentioned previously, mega event is organized every four years, this event is called Song Festival of World Lithuanians (Pasaulio lietuvių dainų šventė) where Lithuanian dance or song groups from different countries of the world participate in this event.

This tradition celebrates creational expression of people, vitality of national culture, love for homeland and solidarity. In 2003 UNESCO recognized Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian tradition of dances and songs also symbolism as masterpiece of verbal and immaterial cultural heritage of humanity.
