Lithuanian language is the main language in Lithuania. Lithuanian language is a part of Indo-European family languages group (Baltic languages group). Lithuanian, Latvian and Prussian languages belong to this group; unfortunately Prussian language is no longer in use.

Lithuanian language as a separate Eastern Baltic language starts evolving in VIIth century. Only Lithuanians among Balts already had their state in XIII – XV century; Lithuanian language was only spoken language at that time. Latin was used for communication with Western Europe, old Slavonic office language – for communication with Eastern Europe.

Lithuanian written language originated in XVI century. Formal Lithuanian language was formed in the end of XIX century – at the beginning of XXth century. Dialect of Western Upper Lithuania was used as a base.

As it was mentioned before, nowadays Lithuanian language is the main language in Lithuania, Western Belarusian regions, Southern Latvia and North Eastern parts of Poland. Lithuanian language also used in Lithuanian communities that emigrated from Lithuania to the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Ireland, Sweden and United Kingdom.
