One of the oldest City squares is located in Vilnius Old Town, Didzioji Street.

The triangular City Hall Square appeared in the place of the former market square, which already existed in the 15th century. The noblemen and merchants built their houses around the square; it was also the place for punishments (a pole stood in front of the City Hall, which was used to whip the offenders), markets, and social life. The Square witnessed numerous armed conflicts between town-dwellers and the aggressors. Two rows of brick shops stretched in the middle of the Square towards the Didzioji Street. They are not there anymore; however, annual fairs held nowadays still contain the spirit of the old times. At that time the Square was much smaller and was located between the current City Hall building, the Church of St. Casimir, and the beginning of Arkliu Street. Currently the Square borders are among the Gates of Dawn, Didzioji and Vokieciu Streets; Didzioji, Stikliu, M. Antokolskio, Vokieciu, and Muziejaus Streets end by the City Hall.

There is a legend that seven Franciscan monks were killed in the Square during the reign of Algirdas, and seven more were crucified on the Bleak Hill (nowadays – the Hill of Three Crosses).

Currently the City Hall Square is known as a place of cultural events. Annual Kaziukas fair, various concerts are held here, and welcomings of the basketball players (which are very important to Lithuanians) are organized in the square as well. During his visit on November 23rd, 2002, the then President of the USA George Bush spoke in the City Hall Square. A memorial plaque reminds of this.
